A Path That Keeps Unfolding

Make an accordion keepsake journal

Featuring Deep in the Forest

An accordion journal has a lovely way of revealing itself. One panel becomes another, and suddenly a little book is a whole path across the table. Make yours a garden walk, a month of memories, or a gathering of things that belong together.

Deep in the Forest • Project inspiration

Finished closed size: 3¼ wide × 4¼ tall.

Inside: 10 connected panels, each 3 × 4.

Allow: about one hour, plus drying.

Gather and Cut

  • Three strips of sturdy paper, each 12 wide × 4 tall.
  • Two cardstock covers, each 3¼ × 4¼.
  • Paper glue, ruler, scoring tool, and clips.
  • Optional: 20 inches of ribbon and thin decorative papers.

A 12-inch scrapbook sheet works well here. The strips are longer than US Letter paper.

Accordion guide: three 12 by 4 strips, scored at 3, 6 and 9; two full-panel overlaps leave ten panels.

Let's Make It

  1. Score each strip vertically at 3, 6, and 9 inches from the left edge. Fold back and forth into four equal panels. Crease carefully.
  2. Lay the first two strips flat. Overlap the last panel of the first strip with the first panel of the second strip. Glue those two panels together across their full area. Match all four edges.
  3. Add the third strip in the same way. Two overlapping joins turn the twelve original panels into ten connected panels.
  4. Refold the whole length into a continuous zigzag. A joined panel is simply thicker; it still needs to follow the alternating folds.
  5. Let the joins dry flat under a light weight. Keep the folds free of wet glue.
  6. If using a ribbon closure, center the ribbon horizontally across the outside of the back cover. Glue only the middle 3 inches of ribbon in place and cover that area with a decorative label or paper panel. Leave both ends loose.
  7. Center the first accordion panel on the inside of the front cover, leaving a ⅛-inch border all around. Glue it in place. Do the same with the last panel and back cover.
  8. Close the accordion gently and check that both covers face outward correctly before the glue sets. Let it dry closed under a light weight, with protective scrap paper between any damp areas.

Make It Yours

Cut decorating panels 2¾ × 3¾. They leave a small border on each accordion panel and keep artwork clear of the folds. Build a story that travels from panel to panel, or give each space its own little discovery.

A Little Worktable Help

This book likes flat treasures. Photographs, thin labels, handwriting, and pressed-paper flowers work better than bulky charms. If it fans open, loosen the ribbon and reduce the layers near the folds.

Before You Call It Finished

Unfold the entire path and refold it twice. Check that neither paper join is lifting and that the covers close squarely.

Your First Little Story

Choose five moments from a favorite walk. Give each one a panel and let the spaces between hold the details you almost forgot.
